Drawings from Life is an investigation between the concrete and obscure. Forms are described in photographic detail, while suspended in a less tangible field. They may dissolve or expand into the ground of the image, confusing the figure/ground relationship. The images, while depicting common subjects, reveal a more complex meaning as the forms interact within the space. Borrowing from the studio practices of painting and drawing, I approach the subject from a more abstract position rather than the typical photographic practice of rectilinear perspective. I apply digital manipulation and other experimental approaches, such as encaustics, to further the tension and interplay between photographic realism and a more abstract space. This combination of approaches and materials represents an exploration of materiality as it relates to less tangible spaces, while also lessening the distinctions between the artistic disciplines. |
